The initial session is generally devoted to assessment and treatment planning. This is generally done through a detailed interview and may include a brief battery of psychological tests.
Although we may occasionally have shorter or longer appointments, the typical duration for a session is 60 minutes, which consists of 50 minutes of face-to-face time with the remaining 10 minutes of the hour being used by the psychologist to complete documentation requirements.
CBT is a time-limited treatment approach. Some patients experience substantial gains very rapidly (e.g., 4-6 sessions), while others require significantly longer (20 or more sessions) to achieve their treatment goals. Certainly many of our patients require a moderate amount of treatment sessions (e.g., 12-15 sessions). The number of sessions required for optimal treatment will vary depending on the nature, severity and complexity of presenting symptoms.
